Like widespread death of her friends, the annihilation of Academy City, Touma dying. Even to a much lesser extent, the loss of her esper power. She's been through a lot in her life, despite her young age, and only something truly horrific happening to her could break her spirit at this point. Or even, her losing everything she had causes her to start using Mental Out for less savory purposes, to make sure she couldn't lose anything ever again.

>>3548319In terms of rivals, there's Ayu, and there's Mikoto. Ayu is an esper whom like Misaki, is (or rather was) a Tokiwadai student, AND has a mental based esper power, which is Mental Stinger. Ayu had been in IDEAL around the same time that Misaki was, and was also developing her esper powers. However, Misaki had hit level 5, and Ayu only reached level 3. Ayu blames the parameter list for this, claiming that it robbed her of the luxuries Misaki enjoy's today. She let her jealousy get the better of her, and hatched what was a fairly complex and elaborate scheme to exact her revenge on Misaki. She almost succeeded too, nearly killing Misaki in the process. She was sent to Reformatory, but it's unknown what's happened to her after. I detest Ayu, all that needs to be said.
As for Mikoto, it's a little more complicated.
