>>3543727"Self-improvement" is cope. It's redirecting the blame back onto the victim for things out of their control. People like to think that they're in control of their life. It makes them extremely uncomfortable to think that they simply got lucky being born as the person they are and that everything they think, do, and believe was already determined before they were born by genetics, time period, country, culture, parents, social status, etc; and therefore have very little agency or free will at all.
This is also why mental illness is universally taboo. Like when we see a homeless person and immediately begin making excuses for why we don't help - "they could get help if they really wanted to". "they're probably just an addict". It's simply the path of least resistance to shift the blame back onto the victim, thereby absolving us (in our minds) of any responsibility we might have.
