While for instance the golden Luger pistol chambered in .454 Casull was entirely asinine (I don't think you can make a toggle-action that can withstand that kind of recoil in any kind of pistol size), it was the setup for a joke.
I like the absurd and strange stuff in the setting, it doesn't bother me very much because I never expected it to be fully realistic.
