Sure there are times when you have the kana right besides the kanji but if you're reading one character at a time you're not really literate and you're just going to drive yourself crazy trying to read like that.

If you can learn to associate a word with a certain image that holds meaning to you, like something related to your waifu then all the better. I read all three volumes of my wife's LN and some kanji words I could never forget, they just got burned into my brain because they are associated with certain imagery.
