Schnaufer had a more tragic end. After over 120 night victories over the homeland, Schnaufer returned to civilian life after the war. Driving a merchant truck along a dark French road at night, he was struck and killed by a drunk driver. A drunkard Frenchman accomplished what the whole RAF could not, to bring down the greatest night ace in history. It's tragic.
