This seems to be the same thing just from a very rushed Anno & crew given they didnt have a full 5 or 6 eps to do it like in the TV series and had to cram all of it into a single film. Them treating Shinji like shit for something they're misunderstanding or are just blind to / unwilling to admit that they too are to blame, sounds in line with what the original series wanted to convey. Given how 3I in the original show was basically caused because no one wanted to actually sit down and tell Shinji what he needed to hear, same happens here with 4I in 3.0 except it's a bit more condensed and ofc suffers a bit since there's way less room for adequate pacing in a 1.5 hr film
