And I don't honestly 'ship Shinji with anyone but Kaworu and possibly Rei. But little Miss "I'm actually your mom, stuffed in an emotionless shell that fucks your dad" makes that a freaky and gross relationship.
I think that all of the kids are really important to one another because they're the only ones who understand exactly what is going on with the other pilots - that doesn't really necessarily translate to romance.
There are obvious attractions, Shinji and Rei, Asuka to Shinji (because he's really the only male she is in constant contact with after Kaji abandons her with Misato) and Kaworu to Shinji because . . . well, Kaworu just does his thang!
It's a complicated story and it gets endlessly irritating when people try to force it into a love story. I'm like, are we not watching the same fucking stuff?
Honestly, I prefer to think of an ending where Asuka isn't stuck with Shinji because he's a worthless piece of shit.
