It was a bit more personal for Mai since Ruupa was responsible for assaulting an old friend of her and she lost her memories as a result. That's why she was so frantic about finding this phantom.
One of her friends had an ability that made it possible to pin-point the location of nearby figures and she was made to promise she won't face Ruupa alone if they were to find her. Despite this she dashed by herself the moment they located her, which resulted in her friend getting hurt trying to protect her a moment's later. Of course she felt horribly for it but her friend never blamed her, saying that's just the way she is.
It's true she can be reckless, but she is also a really emotional person, which was the biggest reason this kind of undesirable situation arised. Moreover she does get a more cool-headed mindset later on.

But probably the one that stands out the most is the one where she entrusted Haruhiko with her will to protect everyone and take care of things, giving him the courage to defeat Ruupa and save the world. It was a heartrending moment, especially if you didn't know everything was going to be alright afterwards but it really shows her inner strength and courage since she was able to overcome her fear and uncertainty moments before disappearing from existence.
