There are many Rei ripoff characters in shows with action and drama. Some of them are goood like Akira Yamamoto. they are a way more valuablr tribute to Ayanami than 2.22 pokapoka fanservive.
There also is ARP fanservice, but it has some value because it lets us know a little moreabout THAT old Rei.
Btw have you watched Yamato 2199? It's good and writers openly stated in interview that Akira is a tribute of respect to Rei. She tatally is like NGE Rei grew up. It even had scenes like
