She is based on Saburo Sakai, an excellent Japanese pilot with incredible eyesight. He was injured during one encounter with American aviators, with glass from his cockpit nearly blinding him. He flew for nearly five hours with glass in his eyes until he could land at Rabaul.
After recovering from his injuries, Sakai trained new aviators.
He ended the war with 64 victories.
