I don't even think it would have to be sad, maybe it could end up like Rei's attitude, "living for my own death" kinda thing where she's happy in the final moments. It'd be a glorious ending after so much build up, and although it would be short, well so was her life. Live fast, die young. Staying true to that until the end of the show would be so much more entertaining then to stray.
