Among anime/manga consumers it's well known but never seen any particular advertise apart from Netflix Ad when an epic and memetic dub was released. Outside of anime and manga consumers, it is not as well known as naruto, dragon ball, or one piece may be.
However we had in italian dub in early 2000s. (I envy a colleague of mine with twice my age who watched evangelion when the episodes were first broadcast...i was just a 3/4yo lol)
Few years ago we had a memetic dub on netflix. Memetic because
1) the characters talked like aristocrats of the 1800s. (Yes even Misato or Asuka)
2) the angel became "Apostles".
3) Kaji's famous speech in the scene in episode 19 is so convoluted that instead of empathizing with shinji you burst out laughing because Kaji talks like a retard while there is Zeruel ravaging the geogront.
Sadly netflix removed that dub. Was peak.
