>>2087018First anon here, and that underwear does look terrible indeed, and the article is right in saying it's wasted potential - but I think wasted potential is the norm for Evangelion these days. I never had my foot too much into the fanbase to begin with, only to check out things once in a while (I think any EVA community is just downright toxic due to internal politics, much like the friends you described you had in the 90's when it comes to Rei). Rebuild was almost convincing me on getting more into EVA again, but I'm not convinced after the third movie to give a hoot.
When it comes to Rei Q, she could be part of a new complex system, but as of right now it simply isn't very likely that it can live up to the original. The new "Rei" the EVA franchise wants to sell is weak and helpless, especially compared to the rest of the characters who's been made stronger and more active than before. The balance is thrown off and it's more like Rei's presence being purely defamatory and mandatory (due to demand) in function. Like I said about the toxicity of the fanbase, I noted that a lot seemed pleased with what I perceive purely as a loss, and that's the end of it for me I guess.
As for re-take, well my opinion of it is the opposite of yours. You've got this... obvious setup for to sadistically harm or weird out the characters. I feel like I just see right through it, and when the point of the whole thing doesn't become to explore or create then it's just pointless. I felt Rei was too OOC as well, so that doujin gets a failing grade from me. I'm not into doujins or fanfiction unless it's extremely good, and guess what? I end up not reading any of it. Re-Take was an exception because fans of Asuka heralded it as the holy grail, and so I had to check it out - it was very much like I expected from people who are into pairings. That is, if EVA retake became part of the evaverse... man I'd just quit and try filter everything eva-related off the internet.
