I've always had self-destructive thoughts, cutting myself as a teenager and suicidal tendencies in my early 20s and all that jazz. To me, smoking just feels like a more mature approach to the same idea. Sometimes I just really like the idea that I'm burning my lungs and slowly killing myself through it. It's the same kind of cathartic feeling I used to get from cutting my skin open, but a far more socially acceptable method. Either way, people smoke for different reasons. It's unhealthy, but it most certainly has mental benefits to some including myself. Not like any respectable professional would ever agree to that though.
