Animal well being is only unique to the location where they live. Sometimes they can adapt, but when you take away the trees and drinkable water. You can't survive. When Gendo laid there and reflected on his treatment of Shinji. Rei, Kaworu and Yui appeared before Him. As Kaworu was killed and We saw his decapitated head fall into LCL. He probably became one with it. Therefore one with Rei and Lilith. That's why also He appeared in EoE as a part of GNR.
