I'm not even Canadian, I just like maple trees.
I think the UJ has an advantage in that it's more of a collection of colored lines that radiate from the center and doesn't have an immediate "top", "bottom" or "side" to weigh it down. Place any part of it at any angle, and it will still be recognizable, so you can effectively use it like a pattern.
