Evangelion actually made me religious, as it happens; I was an atheist in the time before. Then I felt compelled to search deeper and deeper. I don't have all the answers, but it is like I have been called home. How things come to pass.
But do you mean to say that all things of objective value churn the stomach, are "filth ... mixed with icons" in some way? If so, with respect to Evangelion, I think I understand and completely agree. To me, it presents one of the greatest combinations of pessimism and optimism realized in visual media, for reasons I am still discerning.
