BTW I always thought it was stupid that they didn't actually shoot the thing in the head/leg, anything and didn't give it an accurate surgery to retrieve the pilot in one piece.
They were supposed to already know that the pilot is quite safe inside that masive body from experience of being burned and penetrated by different angels.
Shinji was too stupid for that, but if Rei wasn't distracted by him and downed by that Eva i believe that's what she would do.
It's better than letting Dummy Plug save Toji.
