I think people appreciate more having someone who's willing to listen than having someone saying the 'right' things. When people listen and pay attention to you, it shows that they care. Just feeling that you matter to someone can make a big difference in a lot of life decisions.
Words can be empty, and be thrown around by just anyone. We can't really expect them to help unless the other party is desperate to grab onto any type of 'signal' to change, in which case whatever you say really doesn't matter on the first place.
