sad ending =/= never happened, especially if fairly clear in-universe aknowledgements are present.
Rei still retained her importance. in playing a huge part in leading Shinji where he got in the end.
...obviously Rei doesn't need some dude to be awesome or relevant, but any arrangement that makes both less sad and alone is an advantage.
