You can make it as hard or as easy for yourself by setting the amount of new words each day. I think I had 25 at the beginning, which let's just say became pretty painful as time went on, as the reps started piling on. I eventually lowered it to 20 or 15 or something. Even took some days off from new words I believe. My thought process was that 6000/25 lets you learn all the words in Core 2k/6k in only 240 days so I wanted to keep it high.
Tae Kim's guide is really simple and fun. I didn't really have an issue with learning the grammar, it's quite easy.
The most amount of work is ironically when you start actually reading the manga and playing games, compiling your own deck. That's where you really need to start understanding the whole picture. You also don't need to wait as long as I did to do it. As a matter of fact I probably started too late.
The feeling of inadequacy naturally comes on every couple weeks, which brings stress, but as long as you don't give in to it you're fine. It's the same feeling I get with my drawing. I can deal with it much better thanks to already having gone through those experiences with Japanese.
