From the character standpoint, she's supposed to be a direct opposite to Shinji in actions but the same in causes. She's fighting while Shinji runs away, she's forgetting while Shinji lives with his bad moments but it doesn't work for either and they both actually have to change and overcome their troubles.
In the end she's a nice girl and I think my desire to help her as much as possible in addition to fascination with her looks and actions influenced me actually falling in love with her.
I mean come on, you know it's love when you almost hated redheads but like only them now.
