I think the writer originally intended to make it a satire of super heroes and the whole discussion of "Who is the strongest hero?". Even if the writer doesn't admit it publically if you read the manga, very early on it feels like it's mocking super heros and the entire "Hero's Journey" concept. Even right now, currently the manga is goes through an arc where it's the classic "Urggh you beat me but I have another form! So die!" And "I fight for my friends" flash back tropes. As the entire last year or two has been Soley chapters containing those cliches.
I also may be reading too far into it. But without that lens, personally I couldn't stomach it either.
