It would be neat to see some more of that clandestine / espionage sorta stuff in the series given how shady of an organization NERV is. iirc the only thing that sorta fits with what you're talking about that exists atm was this game exclusively made for Japan where you're contracted as some sort of PI for NERV to figure out where the leaks are coming from, and at the end it's revealed that the player character is a friend of Kaji's, and the final mission of the game is you actually going out to plug him as is seen in the original series and the manga.
