EVA plays with it's own rules, you know there's a thing like a soul in Evangelion, which can't be copied or otherwise digitized. In Evangelion, AI's are fundamentally incompatible with any forms of life with a soul, artificial or "natural".
It can even be said that the humans (Lilin) in NGE are the result of biological engineering, they were in fact seeded by none other than Lilith, who technically is Rei's true form. So we've in Evangelion gone full circle.
In the real world, we have no proof that humans like you or I are any different from an artificial intelligence, being just a complex machine that consumes input and shits entropy. The only thing AI explains in the real world, is a man-made intelligence, which Rei isn't. There's no part of her mind that's designed, we're at best talking brainwashing which is possible.
So when we talk about artificial intelligence, and we both agree that the artificial part is meaningless except as an easy-to-understand indicator of how Rei came to be in a more local timeframe, we should scratch artificial and just be left with intelligence.
I just talk a bit about Rei when I've got the time. /c/ has nice pictures, and in this thread, more discussion than I had bargained for.
