When Anno came up with Evangelion he wanted Asuka to be the main character, but Yoshiyuki Sadamoto told him that it would be too similar to Gunbuster and Nadia so he convinced him that the protagonist has to be a boy. Also because he didn't like the idea of a young girl piloting robots and that a male protagonist was more in tone with the mecha genre.
