She basically experiences a PTSD episode and that completely destroys her, then she loses her ability to pilot her Eva. The episode made her relive some of the worst moments of her life and afterwards, she loses the only thing that gives her purpose. This facade of worth, that is, piloting the Eva for the appreciation of others, is gone, and she's fallen into a void because there was no safety net below her, she had no other hobby or job or purpose in the world , she put all her eggs into that basket and it was all gone now. It caught her off guard, and with no fall back, the could only fall into a deep, dark depression. It pains me every time I think about it, and even more when I rewatch that part of Evangelion.
(I'm always scared I'm misremembering, so hopefully I got this right. I don't think I'd fuck up a pivotal moment for my wife, but eh, I'm pretty dumb and forgetful.)

On the other hand, though, Asuka cares a lot about her appearance and she would probably like wearing it if it looked good on her, so you never know, could go either way.
