He said that he wants to end this series in a way that he believes in, so if he really meant that and this is what he was aiming for from the start instead of a cheap cop out trying to please both the people who wanted a happy and those who wanted a tragic ending, perhaps from his perspective he has given Hir02 the best ending he could possibly imagine by taking the Jian theme all the way - two souls who need each other so much they will only ever be complete when they're together and who will always unconsciously seek out each other in every life they will live from now on.
Can't say I like it, but at least looking at it this way it becomes more a matter of personal beliefs instead of just shitty writing, so I guess I can accept that, if only to protect my overall very favorable opinion of the show.
