>>2114554As someone who has had Rei as a waifu since I was introduced to the series, and before I even knew what a "Waifu" was, I would have to say there's a fine line between "Otaku Behavior" and, as you termed it "Running away from reality".
The above concepts you described are not a person "In love with Rei". They are the thoughts and sentiments of someone obsessed with the thought of Rei. While the idea of Rei in a VR world, for example, would be an interesting concept to explore, and in more ways than one *Wink wink, nudge nudge* it would still be nothing more than a digital representation of the concept we understand as Ayanami Rei. In the end, it would simply be that, a representation, just like these Anon's own fawning fantasies of her are. Because Ayanami Rei has never existed, it would be impossible to actually ever be with her, as she is understood by the masses.
I have no problem with the sentiment of "Do it for her" (Can't find the exact pic I'm looking for, but I'm sure ya'll know the one) since it allows oneself to model oneself after what the type of person one would prefer would want, and thus provides a door and self-motivation for self-improvement, but the behavior you described above is just creep-level.
And while I understand the reasons for Vanilla Eva ending the way it did, if Anno does what you described, it'd be a thumb in the eye of all fans, Creep or not. For what it's worth, my own opinion of him as a director and screenwriter would drop, as a result. Considering Eva is what practically made him known (Despite his splendid work in "Nausicaa") in the first place, he has nothing to really gain from acting so dickish in such a manner.
