I can't even call it a battle between the agnostic youth and the orthodox elderly, because we're just not very combative about it. My parents are decisively in the "oh he's only saying it to hurt us" camp, so it hasn't hurt our relationship at all as it's not a major factor in our lives.
When you don't have many options, you have to pick your fights accordingly. If your relationship with your family is so bad that telling them something like this would be unacceptable to them, then you have to start thinking about severing ties as soon as you get the chance to branch out and live your own life, even if getting married and having your own family isn't on the horizon for you. Being alone and unsupported for a while beats being on a tight leash forever.
