While on the topic of romances, Asuka would be great too if Shinji and her could bond over their similar backgrounds. I think that Shinji is really the only one who could kind of "get" where Asuka is coming from, assuming he remembers what happened to Yui. However, the only romances we get in the main series are Asuka in the TV+EoE and Rei in Rebuild 1.0-2.0 and the manga, and it's rather unfair since Rei's romances are deep and philosophical while Asuka's are always shallow (based on lust), toxic, and dysfunctional.
