It's hard enough to be the best, tougher still to remain the best, and even tougher to top the best when you're the one that you're competing against. I don't blame Anno for not matching NGE or I would have to blame everyone in the industry for not matching it too.
I don't do that because there's been many people doing their own thing, being truly great in their own way even if on an apples to oranges comparison in my book nothing is quite like Eva.
But I am disaponted to see how Eva itself has fallen. His other stuff isn't even bad, it's just Eva which he seems intent on degrading. It's always odd when you see people dead set on undermining their own legacy when they would have been better off just letting that be and move on to other things. His regular movies aren't bad, and Rebuild's look and music makes me think it wouldn't have been that terrible as a new sci-fi franchise away from the legacy of Eva.
