Makes me wonder what Anno (if he wasnt Asuka biased) would've had Rei choose if it had gotten to that position narratively; which is why I like what the manga did with Shinji & Rei in instrumentality before he rejects it and the subplot about them holding hands

I know people give the manga shit bc of the ending but I personally really liked the direction it took. Also Anno most definitely copied Sadamoto's hw because the manga ending and Thrice's ending are like spitting images of one another and I cant really complain since it captures that balance between catharsis and melancholy
