Lydia Litvyak (12 victories, 66 missions) was among the best female pilots of the war. She was shot down over Kursk in early August 1943. She died charging into a swarm of JG-52 aircraft. It is known that Rudel, Hartmann, and Barkhorn fought in the same battle, but they did not fight in the same airspace as Litvyak.
Litvyak was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, the USSR's highest military honor.
