If she didn't have a lead role, I think she would still wind up in the same position she is in now - girl who is in love. She would be supportive at first, but when she comes to realize her feelings more she would I suppose become an antagonist. But no, she's an integral part of the story, and she wouldn't be good as a side character.
She already is in a novel, anime and manga, and I believe there is a game (visual novel) out as well. Though alone she wouldn't have much, since her story hinges on the interactions with Yukino and Hachiman.

I'd immediately run after her and prostrate myself before her and do the best dogeza I can and beg for forgiveness and apologize for anything I've said.
