The Japanese have a nice set of mnemonic-like phrases called Kuku (literally '9-9') which helped us learn the times tables from 1x1 to 9x9. After that, there's only really the 12 times table to learn to reach the same level as it is taught in English-speaking countries.
We recited that Kuku shit like the Lord's Prayer.
