I read the book, and in the afterword of the post-movie reprints of the book, there's a blurb that discusses Yonebayashi's personal pilgrimage to Norfolk so he could get a better appreciation for Marnie's home.

Yonebayashi's talent seems to lie in adapting 1960's British YA novels (Arrietty, Marnie and Mary were all adapted from those sorts of books), but he's damn good at it.
