It'ss one of the biggest Asukafag lies and disinfos spread about Rei. Asuka is far more abject in the original, and THAT was intentional. Rei was never supposed to be ONLY a pure, perfect waifu, and this was obvious for episode 1. But that doesn't mean she wasn't supposed to be likable, stand out or be sympathetic. Anno spent a lot of time writing Rei into a character the audience sympathized with, Rei could smile and cry and perform great acts of sacrifice, while also having a dark past and present. Rei is an allround great character and I think Asukafags are jealous of this, being unable to process that Rei is both cute and abnormal at the same time. Rei's abnormality andher progression towards normality is one of the few positive developments in NGE as well.
