Kaworu's character makes up less than 4% of the original Evangelion, and this is being generous. Rei is there nearly 100% of the time since the beginning. In the Rebuilds, bumping this up more (more than 25%) means the story, the characters and it's quality is forfeit.
It was pure pandering because in NGE, the character is introduced and used better, and is a better character. Giving Kaworu more screentime did not make for a better story, it did not make Kaworu a better character, it only did one thing: pander to Kaworu fans. The same Kaworu fans do not seem to care that Rei was to be murdered in the process, instead they embrace it and try to make it not seem important, like you are now.
So not only did it ruin the story, it also ruined the fanbase by turning them into egotistical and spoiled brats. Stop defending 3.33, and before you protest, saying things like this:
