You could (well, at least theoretically, this being EVA after all), of course, just watch the anime and understand everything without ever doing a google search (You can do even withouit the CI if you look closely at ep 21 and the lines about "identical artificial structures! - ) but external statements can serve as a swift and helpfull clarification, especially when you're uncertain about something or someone claims they found the exact opposite thing to your conclusion every bit as self-evident, which happens alot on this world...
