The anime literally portrayed that, but they don't care because they like having the nerd fetish about the shy girl who doesn't speak a lot with a lesbian haircut.
I know a lot of us used to say to them they like a doll and also are just inapt to handle Asuka because she has a personality instead of Rei, but honestly, it's literally true.
We didn't say we could handle Asuka (even if in fact we have a bit of pride that can make us say that or believe we could), but we are honest and real people who love something more real, something who have a soul, something who's alive.
