The transformations were a waste of time. Whether Unit02 gets its ass kicked in its normal mode or in some kind of wacky alt mode, what difference does it make? Unit02 always loses anyway. The only purpose I can think of is the cynical take that it’s to allow them to make multiple kits for the same robot. And I suppose the purpose of Unit02 always failing is that Asuka’s arc is about finding an identity beyond that of a pilot. To that end, happiness cannot be achieved through use of Eva. Still, it just makes it disappointing to watch Asuka turn into a giant of light that does absolutely nothing. Hell, at least the cat mode got a few hits in.
