As for Kaworu, Ive always been intrigued by where he comes from as well, even if it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things (kind of like how the identity of SEELE isnt important, but they still remain compelling). He mentions he's just like Rei, but Rei wasn't exaclty a clone of Yui per se, since Rei was born from what popped out of Eva-01 during the contact experiment, only the later versions are clones, and that'st just a clone of herself. This brings into question how Kaworu would exist if not for the contact experiment.
