In NGE the relation felt more important to the completion of their characters, because they really cover each others weaknesses in many ways. Yet ironically it was their similarity that prevented them from getting together. I don't really see this dynamic in rebuilds. They could pair her up with Mari but that would kinda feel a bit like romance for romance's sake to me. Besides we can't have a relationship in eva without someone or both getting seriously harmed and its hard to see how that would Mari.
