To be honest the series seemed like "a foot in the door" type approach to something bigger. The series touched on a lot of interesting ideas but never fully developed them. Whether or not we'll ever see that "something bigger" all depends on fate. Personally I doubt we ever will.
But the success of Madoka shows that the market is willing to accept cute girls doing not quite cute things.
