It's just that they are a closed can and they don't have the same sound stage as the 701's. They have a fuller bass with more color, where the 701's are very dry and don't give you that bass.
They are an awesome headphone, they are just closed so you are going to get that bass and not have an exact reference , as they add a little color to the music.
I personally love them and they are 1000x more comfortable than the 701's.
If you want to compare anything you should compare the DT 880's to the 701s. They are "open" and have the sound stage that the 701's have an are very good for classical, solo piano, strings, and that female vocals you were talking about. I have tried them, I just wanted something that was closed since I already had the 701's for my open cans.
I like to have a variety of different sounds when I want it. I don't always want the dry sound of the AKG K701's. Sometimes I want to hear that bass kick in and hear those nice full lows, colorful mids, and echoing highs. That is what the DT 770's are for.
