There are several syllables which use a sound somewhere between an r and l, which might be pronounced closer to an r or l depending on the speaker. Because there is no distinction between r and l in Japanese pronunciation, using either r or l is correct in romanization, unless there has been an official or widely recognized romanization already. The same goes for k and hard c, and other similar-sounding letters.
