It's based on a Visual Novel, though the anime kind of butchers the story, cuts out a lot of things (like the sex scenes), and the animation isn't always great, so if you're interested in the story, the VN is the way to go.
Of course, there's also all sorts of spin-offs and stuff to the series (other anime, more VN's, etc), so we're not stuck with one shit anime.
There's a new anime being done of the original VN, this time by a competent studio, so people are kind of excited.
