I think the manga came out in the early 90s with the OVA being early to mid 2000's, so not too old.
From what I remember of the characters, the guy was just determined to find her and love her while the girl loved him as well, but was less public and romantic about it.
I may be getting this mixed up with another series, but I think there was a love triangle situation later in the manga.
It was a while back so my memory is fuzzy, but I can vividly remember them on the platform near a ticket machine, and after she yells at him for make her worry, he hugs her tightly to quiet down.
It's more "d'aww" than I make it out to be.
