The Confederacy was fucked before the war even started. The very nature of a weak central government makes critical things like logistics a nightmare when trying to organize an effective fighting force among a dozen states, each of which has their own chain of command.
The North had practically every advantage possible. The South were going up against an enemy with superior infrastructure, more factories, more free population, (slaves don't make very good soldiers) and a larger, more effective navy. The last point is of particular note. While the industrial North could churn out endless supplies, the South relied heavily on foreign trade, which was brought practically to a standstill by the Union blockade.
If that wasn't bad enough, the Confederates had no clear strategy other than hoping attrition would push public opinion towards peace, which was quite possibly the worst decision possible against the numerically superior North which could afford to lose men.
They had to have known how slim their chances were, and yet they willingly marched to their deaths regardless. It's quite depressing but also honorable and even inspiring.
